Venice, CA's avant-garde poetry center Beyond Baroque was founded by literary maverick George Drury Smith, who recounts his 91-year odyssey; from being gay in the 1940's; establishing L.A.'s avant-garde literary scene; and his battles with alcoholism and his lover's death due to AIDS. The film reveals the difficulties Mr. Smith faced before publishing his first book at age 87, and the life affirming philosophy.
Director Peter Fitzgerald Adams' documentary short subject crafts Mr. Smith's story in oral history, poetry, music by Erik Satie & rap artist Shaolin, as well as animation and archival materials that illustrate his life and times ending with the 50th anniversary celebration of Beyond Baroque.
