Note: A price following by + means the price has not been updated for several years, and has probably gone up.

These are hotels we have heard about or know about.  Prices have not been updated.

They are mostly “2 star” hotels, which means more or less clean and modern, with private toilet and bath or shower (except as indicated) with very small rooms by US standards, and usually TV and telephone, though these may not function in the cheaper rooms.

4TH ARRONDISSEMENT (Marais)

    Recommended by a friend: HÔTEL SÉVIGNÉ, 2, rue Malher, 75004 Paris, phone from USA 011 331 42 72 76 17; fax 011 331 42 78 68 26; http://www.le-sevigne.com/ang_accueil.htm.     Recommended by another friend, who says it’s cheap, but not sure how much it is: GRAND HÔTEL JEANNE D’ARC, 3, rue Jarente (also near St. Paul in Marais); phone from USA: 011 331 48 87 62 11; fax 011 331 48 87 37 31. 36 rooms.

5TH and 6TH ARRONDISSEMENTS - Latin Quarter

Cheap 2 star hotel, well located, but we don't know anyone who has stayed there. HÔTEL STUDIA, 51, boulevard Saint-Germain, 75005 Paris, Métro: MAUBERT-MUTUALITE; phone from USA: 011 331 43 26 81 00; No TV, but phone from all rooms. With toilet and shower or bathtub: single, €54+ to €63+; double, €70+  to €75+; breakfast: €5.

Recommended by a friend, who has stayed here three or four times: — GRAND HÔTEL DES BALCONS, 3, rue Casimir-Delavigne (this street is listed differently in every Plan de Paris (Paris map guide) we have seen. It can be under C, D, L or V (and is sometimes shown as Casimir de la Vigne). In any case it is uphill from the ODÉON Métro station and downhill (important if you’ve taken the RER train in from the airport with a suitcase) from the Luxembourg RER station. The street runs from Place de l’Odéon (which is not at the ODÉON Métro station - that’s Carrefour de l’Odéon) to rue Monsieur le Prince (which starts at the ODÉON Métro station). Phone from USA: 011 331 46 34 78 50. www.balcons.com. Fax from USA 011 331 46 34 06 27; resa@balcons.com. May 2002 rates: Single €70+ to €110+ ; double €90+ to €149+; triple €180+; breakfast €10+. Small but “complete” rooms including such things as pants pressers, hair dryers, etc.

    HÔTEL DES 3 COLLÈGES, 16, rue Cujas, recommended by a colleague of Leston. 01 43 54 67 30

HÔTEL DES GRANDES ÉCOLES, 79, rue du Cardinal Lemoine, 75005 Paris, 01 43 31 70 06. Also recommended by a colleague.

There are dozens of other small hotels in this area, and if they have the official 2-star or better sign, they should be about like the above.
